Information on the CDM in Latin America
Latin America plays an strong role in the CDM. The region’s steadily growing CDM market has a comparatively
good institutional infrastructure and offers attractive opportunities for investments in CDM projects. Brazil is
the first Latin American country in terms of number of CDM projects and expected CERs. Brazil presently hosts 280
CDM projects at various stages in the pipeline, which corresponds to around 8 % of all projects in the world
portfolio.
For this reason, Brazil is one of the target countries of the Federal Environment Ministry’s CDM/JI
initiative. The initiative intends to help businesses who either develop CDM projects, invest in them or supply the
necessary technology to gain a better insight into local conditions and assess available investment opportunities.
Country-specific experts have been hired for each of the target countries. These support German project developers
by providing country-specific information, establishing contacts, identifying projects and screening them as
regards their feasibility.
From October 2009 onwards, information from the CDM/JI initiative on the CDM in Latin America will be distributed
via this website only. The platform www.cdm-cooperation.de is discontinued. Information on Latin American host
countries can be obtained in the „Host country information“ section while current news and conference
announcements on Brazil are presented in the section „German Government Initiatives“ also. A global
project portfolio including project opportunities in Latin America will be available on this website soon.
